General’s Highway

Written by Ren Michael

Well I’m lying back on a hotel bed on the border
With a lovely lady lying right by my side
Maintain’s mystery, keeps close her keys, she says “Baby, will you make it alright?”
Never fakes, double-takes, as she fade ‘way into the night.

Well it’s been a while since I played my guitar
It’s been a while since I played the steel-string blues
I’m going back to my home, on the long road to Californ’
Once I do what I gotta do, honey Ima come back for you

With your hand in mine
As the sun rolls high
It’ll be you and I
And we’ll drink our wine
We’ll walk together
And we’ll make our way
Down General’s Highway

I remember standing tall in the great halls of Sequoia
With a bottle of rose and my own Jezebel
Smell of sweet pine, Sierra skyline, brother I remember it well
Echoed in my soul like tolling church bells

I know sometimes I walk ‘round like I can do no wrong
I know things could have gone better ‘tween me and you
And I’m not sayin’ that I’m no sinner but brother you know you’re no saint
But should the end come soon, at heaven’s gate I’d wait for you

Try and explain, somehow frame your compassion, sweet beauty
Try and explain all the things that we’ve been through
I try and I fail, yet in the long run prevail, for with you, I just can’t lose
With the light of your love that in dark night sees me through

I’m coming back for you

With your hand in mine
As the sun rolls high
It’ll be you and I
And we’ll drink our wine
We’ll walk together
And we’ll make our way
Down General’s Highway
