I have long been away. There can be no questioning that. I can’t say whether I will henceforth be updating this account regularly as I had in the past. What I can say right now is that since my motorcycle crash last October, I have become engrossed by the powers of songwriting and poetry–both of which have also witnessed a long absence from me for the past year.
My interest in that sort of writing died out around the pinnacle of my experiences in journalism. What will follow are bits that I have written both recently and during that first phase of interest that took place nearly two years ago. Some are written by me, others I co-wrote with Jude Rawling, an old acquaintance of mine.
I’ll start with this one. I wrote the lyrics at least two years ago. I never found the right music to go along with it but I imagined the low sound of a synthesizer to accompany it, possibly supplemented by a soft drum beat.
We Found Each Other (In the Dark)
Words by J. Quinby and J. Rawling
Candle lights flickered several hours past nine
Desperate search begins to find what is mine
I’d do anything for an answer, anything for just one spark
Thank God you and me, we found each other in the dark
The roads they roll on across endless stretches of land
I’ve checked all my mirrors. What is animal? What is man?
Many men may have basked in earth’s wondrous wine
But it seems you and I are running out of time
I’d do anything for a light, anything for the warmth of her heart
At least you’ve got me, and I’ve got you, together in the dark
Lightning flashes, silver saxophones roar
The tiger prowls and the spirit soars
St. Christopher let me feel
Let me enjoy a warm, tender meal
Let the music run through me, so the wounds can heal
Let me see it in my soul, so I know this time it’s real
I believe someday that our sun will rise
That we will live in truth, and so free of lies
The rivers will flow , beyond shadows of the sneering crow
Troubles they will pass, pain felt, but felt fast
Summers will last and love shall be cast
But for now until then, we’ll hold on to our spark
Cause you and me baby, we’ve got each other in the dark
I tried to listen IN THE DARK. Stupid buffering.
Only the first 3 lines can I get so far, and I love so much the melody and expression.
Reading the words….so good… I can’t WAIT to hear the rest
