It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City

When I first discovered this song I was blown away, particularly by the acoustic version on ‘Tracks’, as Bruce played it when he auditioned for John Hammond at Columbia Records. I’ve always loved the song for it’s style and rhythm, and the imagery of the Devil appearing “like Jesus through the steam in the street.” When Bruce wrote it, recorded and performed it, he was only just warming up. The songs always gets me in a similar state of mind. It’s a good number to get rolling, when you’re looking to kick things off, or work up just a little sweat walking like Brando into the sun.
